FIRE TECHNOLOGY
Wildfires have become very complex over the decades for many reasons. Technology exists to provide tools and assist fire managers and analysts in strategic and tactical decision making as well as fire modeling.
The Wildland Fire Decision Support System (WFDSS) is one of the many systems that are used today. It uses appropriate fire behavior modeling, economic principles, and information technology to assist managers in making decisions consistent with their Resource and Fire Management Plans. More information on WFDSS is available online.
A website that maintains public domain software for the Wildland Fire Community is located at fire.org. The site contains information on fire related software to include, FIREMON, FEIS, BehavePlus, FARSITE, FireFamilyPlus, FlamMap, FOFEM, NEXUS, NIFTT, and FERA.
The Fire, Fuel, and Smoke Science Program (FFS) of the Rocky Mountain Research Station is located at the Missoula Fire Sciences Laboratory in Missoula, Montana. The program conducts international wildland fire research. For additional information on their research and applications access their website.
